Live Performance Support

WSI Entertainment takes an industry based approach to live performance.

Each week of the course features a range of live performances including musicians, bands and theatre performers. Students are the crew for these performances. Essential connection of system components, lead rolling, gaff ripping and other common day to day activities are practiced and assessed. Working as part of a team is important and these skills are developed along with good communication practice that makes a good gig even better.

PA System Practical

In addition to our weekly live performances we also have sessions each week where PA system signal flow and interconnection can be practiced. Using a range of PA systems starting with old-style discrete component systems and working through to modern, integrated technology students are able to build skills using a variety of system configurations.

Lighting Practical

During the weekly lighting practical class’s student’s work rigging and testing lighting for our weekly live performances. We introduce the common types of lighting fixture, demonstrate and practice how to cable up a lighting rig, test it and focus. DMX and basic lighting control systems are introduced.

Audio Theory

Production professionals are required to use a range of audio equipment. This course has weekly theory classes overviewing each major type of audio device, the common controls they feature and introductory tips on how to use each item. Microphones, mixing consoles, equalisers, compressors, loudspeakers, effects, decibel and sound theory are all covered.

Basic Recording

Many shows require assembly and playback of sound files. We introduce ProTools editing software. This industry leading package is used for sound recording, editing, processing and mixing worldwide. Knowing how to work with sound files is advantageous in the workplace.

Maintenance and WHS

We cover safe work practices as they relate to live performance and performance technology. Students will learn how to make and repair common cables and leads used in entertainment. These practical classes allow students to develop skill in the use of a soldering iron and learn about cable standards.
