This is a beginner course for people who have just started learning
English language and literacy and who have had minimal exposure to English.

The course provides general language education primarily for newly arrived
migrants and refugees who need to develop language skills to participate in a
range of community contexts. The Certificate also includes elective numeracy
modules for EAL learners who may also need to develop numeracy skills and not
just become familiar with the English of mathematics.

Students will develop basic skills in:
- learning strategies to study in formal learning environments
- giving personal information
- comprehending and participating in transactional and casual spoken
exchanges
- comprehending spoken and written information and instructions
- comprehending and leaving telephone messages
- comprehending, telling and composing personal recounts
- comprehending and composing informal texts.
