The last of the trees are being planted and the construction barriers are coming down as classes commence in our new Health Services Building. Nursing, Dental Assisting, Audiometry, Optical Dispensing and Sterilisation students will enjoy state-of-the-art facilities in the new building at Nepean College.
Nursing students are putting theory into practice in three training hospital wards, complete with 24 beds, diagnostic equipment and three Simman mannequins. Teachers are able to remotely control the mannequins to simulate medical scenarios while observing the student’s response behind one-way glass. The Simman Technology enabled spaces allow training in all aspects of airway management including positive pressure ventilation, insertion of Laryngeal Mask Airway devices and Endotracheal Tubes.
The Dental Wing has six dental treatment chairs and intraoral x-ray machines for students to learn to operate and practise on. In keeping with the Building’s environmentally sustainable practices, the Sterilisation Services facilities are equipped with environmentally friendly systems to minimise water, detergents and power use. Optical Dispensing students will use the same lens edging machinery that is found in commercial businesses and Audiometry students will practice in sound proof testing facilities.
The new building also houses Library Services, our Customer Service Centre and the Counselling and Career Service who are on hand to help students through their learning journey and career planning. Additional study rooms with data sharing and interactive workspaces are now available for students to book or from 2016, they will be able to meet at the all-important café to relax, socialise and refuel during the day.
