On the Western edge of the Sydney CBD, two transformations are taking place. One is the construction of the $6 billion Barangaroo precinct, one of the world’s foremost waterfront renewal projects. The other is the construction of a legacy in skills, safety and sustainability, known as the Barangaroo Skills Exchange.
The Barangaroo Skills Exchange (BSX) is a partnership of Lendlease, TAFE NSW and the Construction and Property Services Industry Skills Council, with training ably led by TAFE Western Sydney. The unique on-site learning hub has been set up to provide one-on-one support to over 6000 workers with access to classes and language and literacy teachers at the construction site. Workers who have never attended a TAFE college are now receiving training through the BSX that will help build long-term careers in the construction industry. More than 500 apprentices have received highly customised on-site training giving them real industry experience supported by mentors and teachers.
With up to seventy percent of employees hailing from western Sydney, the legacy of the BSX will raise safety and quality standards across the industry and benefit projects throughout western Sydney in the future.
