T5 adaptor and high efficiency, longlife fluorescent tube

The Institute undertook a project in 2009 to trial the replacement of older style inefficient fluorescent lamps to modern and highly efficient T5 lamps.

Over 2200 lights were fitted with T5 adaptors to enable the use of new long life T5 tubes. The project increased efficiency of the lights by around 36% and will reduce maintenance and lamp replacement costs. Estimated cost savings every year on 2009 prices is $10,000 and around 71 tons of CO2 each year.

During 2013 WSI continued lighting efficiency upgrades and installed a further 2640 energy efficient T5 Fluorescent lamps, 108 LED downlights, and 661 LED lights for exterior spaces, considerably improving the energy and cost efficiency for the Institute.

In 2015/2016 WSI installed 5672 energy efficient LED lighting to replace T8 and halogen lighting at the following sites: Mount Druitt-3940, Blacktown-1498, Penrith-199, Nirimba-38, Kingswood-197.In addition during the same period 158 air conditioning units using energy efficient technology such as inverter variable speed drives were replaced

The carbon mitigation from lighting efficiency upgrades is equal to 261 tons of CO2 annually. WSI plans to continue efficiency upgrades, because it makes good economic and environmental sense.
