Our Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care course is for people who want to work as an early childhood educator in a centre-based service or family day care. This level of educator is responsible for planning, implementing and managing programs in early childhood education and care services in accordance with legislative requirements and is often responsible for the supervision of others.
You will gain skills and knowledge in how to use a national learning framework, regulations and quality standards to support the education and care of children from birth to school age. You will be able to document, plan and evaluate children's play and learning while ensuring children's health and safety. You will be able to support the holistic development of children birth to school age and manage a children's service to address regulations and quality assurance.
Workers in this role may have responsibility for supervision of volunteers or other staff.
Students who are required to complete a work placement in child-related work may be required to complete a Working With Children Check. The check is free if you are a student and unpaid.

Students on work placement will be required to comply with a TAFE Student Code of Conduct and demonstrate their work place readiness.
If you are seeking to enrol in a First Aid unit of competency you are advised that to complete the unit you must be able to perform basic life support skills, for example perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). If you have a disability that would prevent you from performing required basic life support skills you are advised that you will not be able to achieve the unit of competency.

Are there any additional local entry requirements?
A number of courses may require prospective students to provide additional information such as documentation, an expression of interest, evidence that you are already employed as an apprentice, or preferred prior study (or equivalent).
At the compulsory orientation session, you are required to sign a statement that you have not been convicted of a criminal offence involving violence to vulnerable people (being replaced by Working with Children check). If you choose not to sign this form, TAFE NSW is unable to permit you to complete the practical component of your course.
Credit (or recognition) for modules/units may be granted based on previous learning, studies, work and/or life experiences. Please discuss this with the teaching section when you enrol.

The qualification contains units of competency which are common to other sectors.
You will gain credit for these units if you choose to enrol in CHC qualifications for other sectors in community services.
When you finish this course, you will be eligible to apply for entry into the
TAFE NSW Higher Education course Bachelor of Early Childhood Education and Care (Birth-5).
When you finish this course you may apply for advanced standing at universities offering early childhood courses.

What are the units I am required to complete?
Elective units will be given at the orientation session.
The above list includes units being offered at this campus and that are required to complete this qualification. Other colleges may offer different elective options. $757 per semester
Fee waiver for the Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care (course 25281)
The National Partnership Agreement on TAFE Fee Waivers for Child Care Qualifications (Jan 2010 — Dec 2014) supports a more highly skilled and capable Children's Services workforce.
As a result, TAFE NSW fees are waived for eligible new and re-enrolling students undertaking the Diploma of Children's Services (National qualification code CHC50113 (new) or CHC50908) at TAFE NSW in Semester 1 and 2, 2014. Please note there are no arrangements for fees to be waived beyond 2014.
To be eligible for the Fee Waiver in 2014 students must be:
- Over 15 years of age
- Australian citizens or Permanent Residents of Australia or New Zealand citizens resident in Australia or Permanent Humanitarian visa holders
- NSW resident or be employed within NSW or Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students from any Australian State or Territory
- Enrolled or re-enrolling in a government subsidised place in the Diploma of Children's Services (TAFE NSW course number 25281 (new) or 18208). This includes students who are registered Apprenticeship and Traineeship Training Program (ATTP) New Entrant Trainees, and meet the eligibility criteria.
- Other course related charges may apply to cover the costs of materials, resources and equipment used directly during study
- The Fee Waiver does not apply to full-fee paying students.
All TAFE NSW fees and charges are subject to change. From 2015, enrolment conditions and fees will change. Information will be published in 2014 to explain any changes.

Are there any additional costs?
$30.00 Children's Services Resources (full time student), $50.00 (for flexible and part time evening student), $20.00 Children's Services Playsession Shirt for Full Time student (Optional), $35.00 Children's Services Playsession Jacket for Full Time student (Optional). You should allow approximately $130 for textbooks per semester.
How do I enrol?
You are encouraged to attend an information session on Thursday 28 November at 10 am in BlockT1F Room 103.
To enrol into this course, you will need to register and pay online. You must attend a Compulsory Orientation on Tuesday 28 January 2014 at 6:00 pm in T1F.119. You are required to bring proof of current employment in Children's Services for 20 hours per week and evidence of completed Certificate III in Childrens' Services course number 11435 and current enrolment tax invoice.
