Pesticide Usage Notification Plan

Pesticide Use Notification Plan for TAFE Western Sydney Institute.

TAFE Western Sydney Institute has prepared a Pesticide Use Notification Plan in accordance with the requirements of the NSW Pesticides Regulation 2009. The aim of this Plan is to meet the communities expectation about pesticide applications made to public places under the ownership, control or management by TAFE Western Sydney Institute

The Plan sets out how the Institute will notify members of the community of pesticide applications made by its staff and contractors to public places.

Copies of the Pesticide Use Notification Plan will be available from the Institute Office 2-10 O’Connell Street Kingswood, NSW 2747 or from any college of TAFE Western Sydney Institute.

Education for Sustainability

Western Sydney Institute is committed to the ongoing professional development of its staff in green skills and the integration of environmental sustainability across all curriculum areas. All WSI staff have access to green skills training online or face-to-face. 

It is the interests of WSI to embed sustainability thinking in every aspect of learning and onsite practices, for its own purposes, and for the greater good of society. It acknowledges that behavior change can be a long and slow process, though WSI is here for the 'long haul' or as long as it takes to create a sustainable community. 

WSI Powers Up for Sustainability

OTEN solar panel system 20kW

WSI has installed 12 solar electric (PV) systems to date, with a combined capacity of 200 kW, generating around 288,500 kWh of electricity per year. This clean energy source avoids 262 tons of greenhouse gas otherwise being generated each year from coal fired electricity.

Lighting Efficiency

T5 adaptor and high efficiency, longlife fluorescent tube

Western Sydney Institute has been involved in lighting efficiency upgrades since 2009, when it first trialled T5 fluorescent lamp retrofitting.  T5 Fluorescent lamps are considerably more efficient than other forms of fluorescent lighting, and have a longer life span. 

Readily enjoying the environmental and cost benefits of efficient lighting, WSI is on a program of continual improvement of its lighting, as part of its greater goals towards energy efficiency across the Institute.

Water Efficiency

Sensor taps at Blacktown College Childcare Centre Flow Restrictors - The Institute is continuing its program to install flow restrictors to all showers and hand basin taps across the Institute. This reduces water flow by up to 80 percent.

Waste Reduction and Recycling

Western Sydney Institute understands that recycling both good for the planet, and saves money.

WSI recycles many resources for re-use including paper and cardboard, drink and food containers, food waste from kitchens, kitchen and cafe cooking oil, electronic waste, including batteries, printer cartridges, and industrial waste and metals. 

Food and organic waste from the Institute's restaurants and commercial kitchens goes to generate energy at Sydney's Earthpower plant.  After being used for electricity, the liquid organic waste is dried and then turned into fertilizer for the agriculture and horticulture industries. 

WSI would appreciate your support in ensuring your waste goes in the right place.  

Colours for waste resources are 

Yellow - mixed recyclables

Blue- cardboard and paper only 

Red- Non recyclables only, and food waste where no green bin is available

Green-  Organic waste 

Resource Monitoring

WSI has comprehensive online monitoring systems for electricity and water for all colleges using a graphical web interface systems.

Real- time monitoring of resources allows the various stakeholders to monitor resource use and identify waste as it is happening - rather than months down the line.

Electricity produced on site by our 160kW solar PV systems are also monitored to see what contribution out solar electricity is making to our overall electricity consumption. 

Environmental Management System

The Institute has developed a comprehensive Environmental Management System (EMS) over the past 4 years, and now has complete Institute certification to the (international standard) EMS called ISO14001:2004 standards.

Environmentally friendly refrigeration also saving money.

Recently, Kingswood Campus- Hospitality section upgraded its refrigeration system.
